How to win customers, the Pinterest way

By Sufyan bin Uzayr  |  Mar. 29, 2013  |  no comments

In just a couple of years, Pinterest has established itself as the third largest social networking website, behind Facebook and Twitter (and ahead of the likes of Google+).

For a website that is still in relative infancy, such a record is definitely commendable. The question that now arises is, can we harness Pinterest’s popularity to promote our online ventures? In other words, just as we employ Twitter and Facebook to create an online identity of our businesses, will it be possible...

Europe joins the U.S. in condemning U.N. power-grab

By Ben Moss  |  Dec. 4, 2012  |  no comments

As we reported two weeks ago, a closed-door meeting opened yesterday in Dubai that is debating control of the internet. For the next two weeks, members of the United Nations’ International Telecommunications Union will debate a number of topics including whether they should increase their remit from telegrams and telephone calls to include IP-based networks (i.e. the internet).

Concern over this development has been mounting over the last month and at the time of writing more than 1.9 million people have registered their dissent with Google’s...

Disqus: A little less disqusion, a little more action please

Aug. 23, 2012  |  36 comments

In May this year, our editor suffered an unfortunate accident.

Having booted up his machine and fetched his morning coffee he sat down at his desk to review the overnight comments: we’re lucky enough to have a global readership and it’s always a pleasure to read the opinions of subscribers from Arizona to Azerbaijan.

It was when his gaze settled on the number of pending comments that he fell from his chair, hot coffee sprayed liberally about his person. There were more than 500,000 posts awaiting approval. We pride ourselves on engaging with our audience, but half a million responses...

Recent technology developments have sent traditional media into a tailspin, turning nearly every proven marketing strategy into a gamble.

Across the world, in every industry, companies are scrambling to update the marketing tactics on which they’ve relied for generations. At the same time, consumers are craving engaging, relevant content that complements both their interests and their lifestyles.

The most popular search engines have responded to these demands with fundamental changes that have shaken the advertising industry’s foundation.

As marketers, publishers and business owners strive to keep up with this critical juncture in online media, two things are clear: multiplatform...

Building your web design all-star team

Nov. 8, 2011  |  16 comments

Web design is a multidisciplinary craft. So why do so many of us try and do everything ourselves?

Maybe it’s because we can. Our nature as web designers tells us to build things. We have the capability to handle just about every role in a web design project. If we don’t already have the expertise in a certain skill, then at least we have the self-motivation to teach ourselves and learn on the job. That’s how must of us got to where we are. But is doing it all the right approach?

When you look at the bigger picture, maybe it’s not. For me, my over-arching goals are to build an impressive portfolio of work, land bigger and better clients, and grow my web design business. It’s simply not feasible to achieve these goals by doing everything...

As websites like Carbonmade and Dribbble (where designers share and promote their portfolios) make their way into the mainstream, there is an ever growing demand for branding work.

Aug. 4, 2010  |  23 comments

With the recent release of WordPress 3.0 we’re entering a very exciting time.

For the first time in the history of the platform, nobody is working on the next version.

All development outside of essential bug fixing has been stopped… and 3.1 won’t even start development until the beginning of September.

The reason? Well, the core...
